Abstract. At the initial stage of the hydrocarbon study in the Baikal and the Baikal region, information about the signs of oil and gas was recorded. The occurence of hydrocarbons has been found after the oily spots on the lake water and ozokerite finds on the lake shores. By the end of the XIX century, no serious attempts to explor this natural resource have been taken.
