Abstract. In the development of the discipline "History and methodology of geological sciences", the model of research programs of Imre Lakatos is tested on the example of the development of ideas about Cenozoic rifting, volcanism and earthquakes in the Baikal-Mongolian region. The progressive development of hypotheses since the 1950s until now is shown.

Keywords: Cenozoic, rifting, volcanism, earthquake, active fault, Baikal.
