Abstract. The history of studying the Botogol graphite deposit has been going on for more than a century. Geologists of Irkutsk State University N.A. Florensov, M.M. Odintsov, V.S. Sobolev and V.P. Solonenko, who later became world-famous scientists, made a great contribution to understanding the genesis and structure of this unique deposit. They worked at the field during the Great Patriotic War, when graphite was a strategic raw material and the country's industry was in dire need of it.

Keywords: N.A. Florensov, M.M. Odintsov, V.S. Sobolev, V.P. Solonenko, Eastern Sayans, Botogolsky char, graphite deposit, discovery of ore bodies, genesis and structure of the deposit.
