Mudflow Activity on Tourist Routes in the Area of Munku-Sardyk Mountain (Eastern Sayan)

Abstract. The article characterises the area of high mountainous relief, where popular tourist routes to Munku-Sardyk Mountain (3491 m) are located, where there is a danger of modern debris flows. Along with the coverage of modern debris flows, the issue of the origin of numerous landforms and proluvial formations of older, catastrophic debris flows with the age of about 6.5 thousand years is touched upon. When at the last stage of retreat of the cover-valley glaciers and during the hyperthermal interglacial of 7.5-5 thousand years, the origin of numerous landforms and proluvial formations of older catastrophic debris flows will be discussed. years ago, the last ice tongues and caps of the cover-valley glacier melted very quickly due to a sharp increase in temperature, providing a large volume of high-water fluvio-glacial flows, which, mixing with moraine material, formed catastrophic mudflows that swept across all river valleys, and in the northern spurs of Khamar-Daban and reached Lake Baikal.

Keywords: g. Munku-Sardyk, Eastern Sayan, ancient and modern debris flows, causes of their occurrence, proluvial deposits, debris activity, debris hazard
