Abstract. A concise geological overview of the Tunka Valley tectonic structure, sedimentary and volcanic rocks, mineral waters, dangerous geological processes, structure of the pre-Cenozoic basement, and development of the Cenozoic rift structure is given in a way accessible for understanding by schoolchildren and students who have come into contact with geology for the first time.

Keywords: Baikal, volcanism, continental rifting, groundwater, mudflow, suture zone, pseudotachylite
