Middle Eocene-Early Miocene Volcanism in the Tkapravayam Area of the Kinkil Volcanic Belt, Northwestern Kamchatka: Suprasubduction Geochemical Signatures of Volcanic Rock Sources

Abstract. From K–Ar dating at the Tkapravayam area of the Kinkil Volcanic Belt in Northwestern Kamchatka, the age has been determined to be between 50 and 20 Ma, subdivided into intervals of 50–31 and 26–20 Ma. Younger rocks ranging in age from 12.8 to 6.7 Ma have also been detected. The rocks are dominated by andesites and basaltic andesites, with subordinate basaltic andesites, dacites, and rhyolites. An antidromic sequence of volcanic eruptions, ranging from dacites and andesites to basaltic andesites, has been identified in rocks of the late Oligocene to early Miocene age range. A similar antidromic sequence was previously defined in the lower (Shaman) Middle Eocene part of the Kinkil volcanic complex. The entire rock spectrum is characterized by suprasubduction geochemical signatures – low TiO2 content, Nb–Ta depletion, and a shift of rock compositions from the oceanic basalt direction toward the continental margin source area in the Th/Yb – Ta/Yb diagram. Two age intervals of the Kinkil Volcanic Belt may indicate its whole suprasubduction activity or its main activity in the Middle Eocene – Early Oligocene with localization of the antidromic sequence in the Late Oligocene – Early Miocene.
